 - Picard (2007), p. 10: âFirst, this strangely isolates Gagnon from GagnĂ©, which comes from the old French gaaigne âarable landâ, as well as from its numerous derivatives, most of which mean âplowmanâ. Morlet cites Gagnant, GagnĂ©, Gagnaire, Ga(i)gneux, Gagneur, Gagneor, Ga(i)gnoux, Gagnadour, Gagnedour, Ga(i)gn(i)er, Gagneron, Gagneret, Ga(i)gnerot, Gagnereau, Gagneraud, Gagnot, Ga(i)gnet, Gagneau, Gaigneaud, Gagnault, Gagn(i)Ăšre, Gagnerie, and there are surely others. . . . the first Gagnons were from Lower Normandy, the same region where the GagnĂ©s came from, which seems to indicate that both surnames were originally nicknames for plowmen.â
